Product Experience Laboratory

Started fall 2022

The birth of PX-Lab came from two things. The hate I have for the way most products are made today, and the love I have for the way humans can invent and engineer.

In the fall of 2022, I wrote this manifesto:

MANIFESTO

Our culture has evolved a lot over the last 100 years and the idea of what a "product" is has changed a great amount during that time. Today, it is deeply ingrained in our brains that a product consists of an "inside" and an "outside". These two words are often used interchangeably with "engineering" and "design". This is the way we talk about products and this is the way we develop them, but why?

Corporations have decided it is for the better to hide the "ugly" technology and to put it inside a "pretty" shell. They think people are too dumb to see the truth, so they trick us into believing the products they sell are something they're not. Most products, in that sense, are not only demeaning, they're lies. They see people as something that needs to be deluded and controlled, not trusted and believed in.

The second problem with the "pretty" shell is that it cannot be removed. Today, most products are completely enclosed, not allowed to be opened. A product that cannot be changed in a way that suits you or cannot be fixed if it breaks, is that really a product you own? And if we as people are surrounded and dependent on these products, are we really free?

Simply put, the mission of PX-Lab is to give people more control over the technology they own. True ownership.

We want to do that by producing exciting products that are true to themselves and allows people to understand them and connect with them. People should know what the products they use are actually made of and the way they look should align with how they work. The products should also be made in such a way that makes it okay to take apart, change and fix without being dependent on the manufacturer. To make it easy, we want to offer people to buy extra components, but it's also important for us that people can do these changes without us. Therefore, we want to openly share the complete blueprint for every single product we make, for free. This will take the form of a product manual that explains how it's constructed, how it works and how to operate it.The manual will be vital because the product will not come assembled, but in separate components. The process of putting it together not only teaches you about the technology, but it also encourages you to play around with it and understand it more.Increasing technological literacy is at the core of our mission to give people more control over the technology they own.

Since then, in parallel with creating our products with the rest of the team, I've lead the vision and branding for the company.

The following is a collection of some of the material I've made in connection to that.
